Like thousands of other Abia citizens, I was almost caught flat-footed. It had barely appeared to me that the office of the wife of the Governor as headed by Deaconess Mrs. Nkechinyere Ikpeazu could be so efficacious as we have been experiencing even without statutory monthly allocations, yet it became necessary to even partner with the office of the Executive Governor of Abia State hence her official visit to her husband, the Governor.
Fittingly described as the Dorcas of our time as chronicled in Acts of Apostle 9:36-39, Mrs Nkechinyere Ikpeazu continues to be a beacon of light that has lightened many paths. Results and achievements abound for the ever smiling First Lady that a textbook of many pages may not be enough to pen down these resounding achievements.
Through her Vicar Hope Foundation, a humanitarian, non-profit making organization, a lot of lives are transformed on daily basis through the collaborative efforts of functional agencies.
And with the wife of the Governor’s Widows/Indigent Shelter Scheme (WISS), over 50 unit houses has been built to numerous indigent Abia Widows. The houses are built through direct labor, providing jobs for our people.
The Governor’s wife embarked on empowerment of over 250 indigent women across Abia State in Ukwa in collaboration with national directorate of employment (NDE) in skills and empowered them financially and materially thereafter to remain self reliant.
The Deaconess’ pet project, Vicar hope foundation has distributed over 1,000 empowerment materials to include grinding machines, sowing machines, etc. The wife of the Governor equally launched school feeding programme from primary one to six, a couple of months before the federal government rolled out theirs. The school feeding programme relies on local products which are bought from home grown Agro products, hence, boosting both the macro and micro economic narrative. Currently, over 1,000 Abia women are employed in the business.
As part of a better learning approach, Vicar Hope Foundation engaged in deworming projects where over 1,800 pupils had been dewormed.
More over, the wife of the Governor has taken the lead in ensuring safety and educating the masses as it had championed the legislation and awareness geared towards people to knowing their blood groups and genotypes which invariably reduce child and maternity mortality rate as well as the reduction of some complications seen during pregnancy and child delivery.
The wife of the Governor had embarked on projects to save girls from sexual assault and harassment as well as social orientation project where she engaged in educating the young people on the ills of drug abuse, premarital sex, cultism, violence, etc.
Through her ‘Abia Book and Learning Link’ two schools has been built and furnished with over 2000 books distributed to enable the kids read and learn.
As if all the above mentioned are not enough, Vicar Hope Foundation has distributed over 340 wheelchairs, 100 clutches to physically challenged persons since about 30 months from 2015. The office of the wife of the Governor with Tolaram Charity Foundation fitted artificial limp to about 150 amputees, free off charge on the 11th of March 2017.
Recently too, Vicar Hope Foundation launched and interesting book titled “Healthy Living for Teenage Girls”, a book I will describe as a solution to some societal problems as it affects teenage girls.
Finally, she has footed the hospital bills of countless number of Nigerians, while also helping people living with sickle cell anemia to keep living.
Above all, the wife of the Governor remains a blessing to not just the husband, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu PhD, but also to the good people of Abia due to her undying enthusiasm and effervescence to see and make people healthily happy. While we cannot fail to admit that our eagle eyed first Lady must have faced some challenges in her efforts to accomplishing these enormous feats, the fact remains that Abia state is on the trajectory of progress and transformation as this path is continued to be followed by the visionary first Lady.
Like visionary husband, like visionary wife.
