About 40 tricycles for mobility were distributed to the physically challenged persons in Abia South Senatorial Zone of Abia State comprising Aba North and South, Obingwa, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East and West under the Abia State Free Medical Mission 2020.
Speaking while flagging off the exercise in a ceremony held at the Primary Health Centre, Ohanze in Obingwa LGA, the Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu noted that the Free Medical Mission was embarked upon as part of effort geared towards improving the healthcare needs of those in the rural areas.
Represented by a former Deputy Governor in the State, Chief Acho Nwakama, the Governor informed that the scheme would be used to distribute tricycles for mobility to the physically challenged persons as well as reach out to the rural dwellers with free medical care.
In an address of welcome, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban and Rural Health Services, Dr. Stalla Kamalu disclosed that the Free Medical Mission was introduced as a platform to reach out to rural dwellers in terms of improving their healthcare needs noting that the same would be replicated in the the entire Senatorial Zones in Abia State.
Also speaking, the Personal Physician to the Governor and covener of Abia State Free Medical Mission 2020, Dr. Michael Enyinnaya informed that the Free Medical Mission was done in partnership with Med-Share, an American donor Agency in collaboration with Abia State Indigines the Diaspora.
In a goodwill message, Mrs. Ngozi Ogbonna-Erondu, Special Adviser on Diaspora Matters, who commended the achievements of the State Governor in the area of health, appreciated the organizers for a well thought out progamme.
In an interview with ABIA ONLINE, The National President, Abia State National Association of North America, Chief Chibuzor Ngwakwe stated that the programme which was initiated in Atlanta US by Dr. Kamalu as part of Abians in the Diaspora agenda to participate in alleviating the plights of our people resident in the rural communities.
While commending the Governor for facilitating the actualization of the programme, Chief Ngwakwe called for the creation of Healthcare Improvement Commission that would cater for the health care needs of the people and make the issue of healthcare a regular exercise instead of a one-off ceremony.
