ABIA MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT: STRENGTHENING LAID DOWN POLICIES.

“We must put things straight as far as transportation is concerned in Abia state” – Abia Transport Commissioner says.
Mrs Obewu said this while in a meeting with the 4 transport unions in the state.
She informed them that the time for intimidation and lawlessness has gone in Abia state.
“Ministry of transport under my leadership is out to sanitize the ministry and its unions”she said
She assured the union leader that Governor Ikpeazu is working round the clock to see a tout free Abia state and insists that no union in the name of Godfatherism can intimidate Abia state anymore.
She charged the union leaders to make sure that all the vehicles operating in the state, both government and individual must have an operational permit as it is according to the transport policies.
The female commissioner informed them that the operational permit is never a new thing as it has been in existence in states like Enugu, Anambra, etc.
She decried the behaviour of some of the union leaders especially putting loading bay where not necessary. She warned that they should be proactive and do the needful as she won’t tolerate such again.
She made known the penalties for operating illegal parks and promise to punish offenders accordingly through the mobile court.
RENEWAL OF LOADING BAY;
She enjoined the unions to come to the ministry and pick the forms for renewal of their loading bay according to the state transport policy.
She also informed them that the state ministry of transport has the right according to law to close any park found illegal and promise to look into parks in Aba and environs.
In his words the HOD transport, enlightened the union on the policies of transport sector.. He informed them of the national transport policy which is in law and being implemented in other states.
“There are standards in establishing parks which one of them is having more than one parking at a particular place”
He warned that its not constitutional for any body, union or the local government to establish a park without the approval of the state ministry of transport.
The HOD also said that  the state is ready and willing to sanitize the transport service and warn that its illegal to establish a park at a fuel station and insist it must stop.
He said its important that the city centre be dicongested hence the need for them to work together with unions to stop illegal parks and touting.
One of the union leaders Mr. Choppy thanked the commissioner for the meeting and also suggested that government should make it serious that all transport vehicles move to the government approved parks in the state.
His words, “I urged the commissioner to sanitize the major cities (Umuahia and Aba) so as to achieve results in all these policies”.
The peak of the meeting marked the inauguration of a 4 man committee headed by Chief Oleka of NURTW by the Commissioner to work with the ministry to ensure proper implementation of the transport policies.
