Every good governance is measured around some key pillars: transparency, accountability, inclusiveness and others. Therefore, efforts have continuously been made by the present Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu led administration to undertake reforms to improving on these pillars which are the railroads on which the Governor drives the policies and activities directing the objectives of this people oriented Abia government.
To, once again, cement his commitment to the service for which he was elected, the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu (Ph.D) has used the opportunity of the 2018 Democracy Day celebrations to present his score cards to the Abia electorates.
In his speech at the International Conference Centre, venue of the event, the Governor made it clear that, in line with his pillars of development, including Trade & Commerce, SME, Agriculture, Oil & gas, Education, a lot has been achieved.
According to the Governor, his efforts have made it possible for Aba to export two million pairs of shoes weekly while about 250 thousand artisans are doing shoe, belts and fabrics. He called on people, especially youths, to seize the opportunities being provided by his administration to learn skills, assuring that his government would patronize chairs and desks produced from those who would learn the skills.
The Abia chief servant disclosed that more than 60 roads have been done and most of the roads done by grade ‘A’ contractors. He said, in education, emphasis is on technical education and three schools have been selected for a start in providing technical education to students in Abia. He expressed joy that under his tenure Abia has maintained the lead in WAEC results for three consecutive years and revealed Owerinta has been designated as education hub of the State, inviting churches and private individuals to build universities at Owerrinta. The Governor equally infirmed that he has exposed teachers to Australian educators to train and equip them with modern trends in basic education.
The Governor expatiated on the establishment of the Mother/Child Specialist Hospital and the Free Home Healthcare Services for the elderly as well as other interventions in health, agriculture among others.
He informed teachers in the State that efforts are in top gear to pay their salary arrears and equally assured that government would continue to carry out workers’ verification exercise to ensure ghost workers are not in the pay roll of government.
In his speech, the member representing Aba North and South Federal constituency, Hon. Ossy Prestige, congratulated Governor Ikpeazu and entire Nigerians on the 19th Democracy anniversary and said that attracting projects from the federal government would compliment the Governor Ikpeazu’s projects and bring development to Abia.
Also speaking, the Speaker of Abia House of Assembly, Barr. Chikwendu Kalu, State PDP Chairman, Sir Johnson Onuigbo and Chief Tony Ukasonya congratulated the Governor on his third anniversary in office, saying that he has performed creditable in various sectors of the Abia economy.
The interactive cum town Hall meeting witnessed questions and answers from journalists and stakeholders in the State.
