Speaking on the floor of the Lagos State House of Assembly during a House proceeding as seen in a video that went viral across social media on Thursday, Desmond Elliott condemned the youths for allegedly inciting violence and hatred through the use of the social media.
The lawmaker, representing Surulere constituency, who fumed over the damages that went down during the #EndSARS saga, said the use of social media by the youths has increasingly caused more damage than good.
He noted that if the narrative keeps being the same, Nigeria might, as soon as five years time, be no more.
Elliott went further to blame social media influencers and celebrities for passing hate speech and fuelling much of the crisis.
He said; “We need to address certain things; the Nigerian youths, the social media, the social influencers. All of these are making the narrative we are seeing today except we are joking with ourselves.
Social media, though good, has its negative impact.”
Speaking further while thanking the House speaker for condemning the wanton killing and carnage that happened at Lekki, Elliott, in his fury stated that “When I went through the comments, I could not believe it is Nigeria. The curses, the abuses from children, and I ask myself, is this Nigeria? children cursing, people having the effrontery to enter an Oba palace and stealing the staff office, culture is gone.
“In the next five years, there will be no Nigeria if we don’t start now.
“The youths are not only those who did the peaceful protests but also those who looted.”
He also challenged the celebrities and motivational speakers to rise to the occasion to change the narrative.
“Stop the hatred already,” he added.
A few days ago, the Surulere constituency representative was dragged and accused of sponsoring the social media bill in the assembly, which he later came out to debunk.
