Free meal programme for pupils in Primary schools is an initiative aimed at promoting free midday meals in all public primary schools in Abia State as a child. It will also help to meet the basic nutritional needs of Children as well as significantly enhance the academic performance of Children and increase their opportunities of reaching full potentials.
The programme which is also targeted at reducing the pressure on house hold budgets for food is a private / public scheme supported by Farmers and Partners.
Abia State was among the first States to launch the programme which was keyed into by the Federal Government but was limited to pupils from primary 1-3 by FG.
To address the limitation, the Wife of the Governor Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu in her magnanimity increased the reach by making sure Abia takes charge of pupils from primary 4-6.
Today, 70,748 of pupils in Primary 4-6 are served free meal in Abia State.
So far, the programme’s economic importance cannot be overemphasized.
It has given direct job to about 2,671 cooks (Women) as well as enhanced agricultural productivity and consumption in the State.
A breakdown shows that 910, 872 number of eggs are served on weekly basis. 850 tubers of Yams are served on weekly basis , 136 50kg bags of rice as well as 102 50kg bags of beans are served to pupils in Primary 4-6.
All these are locally sourced from Abia markets and Farms which means that funds flow and increases Agric produce while encouraging our farmers to increase productivity .
