Benue State, known for its agricultural prosperity, has once again been thrust into the spotlight, but this time for a series of grim attacks that have shaken communities in Agatu, Apa, and Gwer West Local Government Areas. According to local reports, these incidents, which occurred between Sunday and Monday, have left five dead, several injured, and one woman abducted, exacerbating the state’s ongoing struggle with banditry and armed herdsmen assaults.
This surge in violence coincided with the state government’s mass burial on Tuesday for 17 victims of an earlier attack in Mbaikyor, Mbalom within the Gwer-East Local Government Area, highlighting a disturbing trend of insecurity in the region. The ceremony, attended by state officials including the Deputy Governor Sam Ode, representing Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, underscored the profound grief and mounting frustration within the affected communities.
The attacks, described by locals, involved a deadly combination of shootings and abductions, with one incident in the Agatu LGA resulting in four fatalities, including a particularly brutal beheading and the amputation of three victims. The APA LGA saw a strategic blockade by bandits targeting travellers, leading to a kidnapping and shooting incidents, signalling a distressing escalation in the tactics employed by these armed groups.
In the face of this crisis, calls for a more robust and community-involved security strategy have intensified. Governor Alia, through Deputy Governor Ode, advocated for the formation of vigilante groups as a frontline defence against such attacks, emphasizing the need for community self-protection and promising governmental support in this endeavour. This approach aims to bolster the state’s security framework in response to what many see as an inadequate response to the security needs of rural communities.
Moreover, the state’s commitment to improving infrastructure, like road construction to facilitate emergency responses, and the potential establishment of a police station in the affected area, reflects a multi-faceted strategy to combat the menace of insecurity. However, the efficacy of these measures remains to be seen, as the community continues to mourn and call for immediate and effective action to prevent further loss of life.
As the state grapples with these challenges, the voices of the bereaved and the survivors highlight a crucial demand for the government’s primary duty: the protection of its citizens. With historical precedents of similar attacks, the urgency for a decisive and proactive approach to safeguard Benue’s communities has never been more critical.
