Government Area of Abia State has sent an SOS to the Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on the effects of a natural disaster that befell them.

It was gathered that properties worth millions of naira were destroyed as a result of a heavy downpour that hit the community on May 6th, 2020.

The heavy rain, reports said, completely blew off the roof of one of the community school’s building, destroyed all the stalls and shops on the community’s local market while rendering many people homeless.

Speaking on the issue, the Head teacher of the affected school, Mrs. Grace Agwu, who was seen openly weeping called on the education friendly Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu to come to their rescue.

Mrs. Agwu explained that the school has only two buildings, the five-classroom block that was destroyed and another two-classroom block which was recently donated to the school by an age grade.
She noted that the two-classroom block which though was affected partially cannot accommodate the pupils in the event that the school reopens.

In an interview, a community leader on the area, Elder Nwankwo Bassey, who expressed shock on the extent of damage caused by the rain, however, thanked God that no life was lost.

Elder Bassey called on the Abia State Ministry of Education, the Honorable Members representing their constituencies both at the Federal and State Assemblies, Hon. Uko Nkole and Dr. Micky Ukoha, respectively, to come to the aid of the community in repairing the damages

He made a passionate appeal to the government to do something fast especially now that the schools are closed down because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He appealed to the government to extend their gesture to some of the individuals whose houses and business premises were also affected.

Pointing to a building housing one of the rice mills which was completely damaged, he explained that the rice mill was the only hope of a poor widow whom he said lost her husband not too long ago.

Neither the Traditional Prime Minister of the community nor the Chairman of the Community’s Development Union could be reached at the time of filling this report.
