In a revealing turn of events, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has announced ongoing efforts to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). Amidst the legal battles facing Kanu, Kalu disclosed that a political resolution is being sought to ensure his release. This statement was made during a special edition of “The Ben Kalu’s Mandate” aired on FLO FM, Umuahia, Abia State, where Kalu emphasised the concerted efforts behind the scenes to achieve this goal.

 

Kalu’s announcement comes in response to inquiries about the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P), a recent initiative he launched aimed at addressing the security challenges in the South East through non-violent means. The Deputy Speaker stressed the importance of Kanu in the peace process and assured that influential figures within the country are aware of and involved in the efforts to secure his freedom. Kalu also highlighted a potential dialogue between Igbo elders and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, focusing on issues pertinent to the South East, including Kanu’s situation and the South East Development Commission (SEDC).

 

In his discourse, Kalu praised the administration of President Tinubu for its inclusivity towards the Igbo community, pointing out the significant appointments and recognitions that have been bestowed. He urged for support for the current administration, emphasizing peace and constructive engagement over protests and violence. Kalu’s comments reflect a broader appeal for calm and unity within the South East, urging the community to rally behind efforts to foster peace and development.

 

Moreover, Kalu updated on the South East Development Commission Bill, which is currently at the conference committee stage in the legislative process. This bill aims to address regional development issues and is seen as a critical step towards addressing longstanding disparities faced by the South East. The Deputy Speaker expressed optimism that the bill would soon be enacted, further contributing to the peace and prosperity of the region.

 

Kalu’s revelations mark a significant step towards reconciliation and peace in the South East, highlighting a multifaceted approach that combines legal, political, and community efforts to resolve one of the region’s most contentious issues.
