In a bid to showcase to the public the programmes and projections of the Abia State government, the governor of Abia State Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu adopted a quarterly press briefing method which has in no small means brought the government activities to the door steps of the masses.
This gesture has been greeted with lots of applause and has become a norm amongst members of the executive council of the State. Among the ministries which has made this the tradition is the ministry of transport whose boss has decided to let the public know the true nature of events against numerous propaganda peddled against the ministry.
In a bid to bring back sanity in the transportation sector, the Abia State Commissioner for transportation, Barr. Mrs. Nnenna Obewu stated that she cannot be moved by any form of inducement in the course of discharging her duties.
This, among other things she disclosed to journalists at a press briefing held in her office at the Secretariat, Umuahia, calling for intensified efforts in the fight against bribery and corruption in the transportation sector.
The Commissioner for transportation, Chief Mrs Nnenna Obewu further disclosed her ministry’s unrelenting efforts in eradicating touting in the state.
Barr. Obewu expressed dissatisfaction that 98% of transporters at Isi gate and along Umuwaya road in Umuahia are operating illegally and disclosed that the state government has set up a monitoring task force that will enforced them to relocate to government approved park.
She harped on the need for total compliance by Keke and motor unions so as to bring sanity in their operations.
According to Chief Obewu, the Governor is making frantic efforts at providing more vehicles for fire services across the length and breath of the State and added that the ministry is set to establish 3 vehicle inspection centres within the three senatorial zones.
She also warned that anybody caught collecting illegal levies will be dealt with just as she urged passengers to desist from boarding vehicles along the roads so as to discourage touting and ensure safety of lives.
