Abia State Governor, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, Ph.D during his second tenure inaugural speech vowed to rejigg some parastatals to make them self sustaining and be able to pay their workers as and when due while also defraying all pension outstanding in the State. The Governor also assured of consolidating on welfare of Abia workforce through systematic clearance of all salaries of parastatals and pension outstanding in the State. These and other promises are in line with the Governor’s vision of consolidating his achievements.
However, the administration cannot achieve its target and goals without the smart legislative input and backings of the State House of Assembly.
On 10th of June, 2019, this visionary administration of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu got a boost as the 7th Abia State House of Assembly was inaugurated with a man of vision who is loved by the people; the Member representing Umuahia Central State Constitutuency, Rt. Honourable Engr. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji popularly known as IKUKU emerging as the Speaker of the hallowed legislative house.
IKUKU’s emergence became a great boost and encouragement to the administration of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu from the day one till today, The House, under IKUKU’s watch has not relented in supporting the dreams and visions of the Governor of the State.
Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji and other 23 members of the State House of Assembly have within two months in office proved their mettle and shown their sincere commitment to the cause of taking the State to enviable height.
Within the period under review, IKUKU and his men have swung into action in consonance with the House tradition of legislation, represention and oversight. The House has assisted the Governor through her oversight functions; Particularly through motions of Urgent Public Importance, the House members have deliberated and constituted various committees to tackle financial issues bedevelling different parastatals in Abia State. The separate ad-hoc committees that have been constituted are to investigate the operations of the following parastatals in the State; ABSUTH Aba, Abia Polytechnic Aba, ABSU,Hospital Management Board (HMB), Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu (ASCETA), School of Health Aba and Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State (BCA).
The actions of the Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji’s led 7th House of Assembly is by no means a surprise to Abians. This is because, Engr. Chinedum Orji has been known to be proactive and living up to his promises. Recall that while delivering his inaugural speech as the Speaker of the 7th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji said “we shall endeavour to make the people the centre-point of all our actions and decisions. We are therefore committed to the enactment of sound laws and legislation that will help in uplifting the lives and well-being of Ndi Abia”. Little wonder, the House has done so much so far.
Secondly too, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji has prior to now shown that he is a lover of his people and has ensured that several lives of both members of his immediate constituency and Abians at large are affected positively.
It is expected of people of the State to throw their support behind the House of Assembly to enable them do more. Equally, it is important to appreciate the vibrant and committed 7th Abia State House of Assembly to ensure the House maintains the tempo with which it is piloting the legislative house. The House should not be misunderstood or seen to be witch-hunting anybody or institution.
