Rural development projects are important for improving the quality of life for people in communities isolated from the flow of resources and services in urban hubs.
To achieve this, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu understands that rural development projects must be aligned with the needs, aspirations and capacities of beneficiaries to promote local ownership and empowerment. Thus his call for rural developmental projects’ implementation, also being part of his campaign promises.
Local ownership, empowerment and rural development projects can only be achieved by a government that has the interest of the populace at heart – what Ikpeazu’s administration stands for.
Constitutionally, and in practice, there are three tiers of government; the Federal, the State and the Local government.
The local government is headed by a Chairman and councillors; this is the nearest and most accessible government to the people. Their roles are explicitly enshrined in the Acts establishing them.
However, to utter dismay, this cardinal tier of government has only been living in name occasioned by several bottlenecks, which has rendered her incapacitated to perform her statutory roles, mostly blamed on the unnecessary interference by the State government. This, having led to its wrongful perception as an offspring, instigated the age long clamor for local government autonomy in order to shield her from the manipulations and excessive control of the State government. All the aforementioned challenges and many more made the local government to become seemingly castrated, hence under-performing.
It is against this backdrop, that our visionary Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu Ph. D, should be lauded and extolled for his unremitting efforts and zeal to bring back the long faded glory of the local governments.
It could be recalled that a credible local government election was conducted in the State which produced the present chairmen and councillors, a step to ensuring independence and stability of the local governments.
In order to push the service delivery of the local governments to the highest radar, ensuring that development gets to all the nooks and crannies of the State, Governor Ikpeazu has directed the chairmen of the 17 local government areas of the State to interface with their councillors and community leaders to identify one project per bordering on markets or town-hall renovation and report back to him within one week.
This is taking place for the first time in the lexicon of governance in Abia State, with multiplier benefits and significance.
First, it shows that Governor Ikpeazu is an ardent believer in participatory governance, which is, inarguably, the crux of democracy.
The vision, commitment and quest to reignite and reinvent the local government system are unparalleled and laudable.
It is imperative, to assert that Governor Ikpeazu will have written his name on the tombstone of history as one that took development to the far-flung rural Abia, indiscriminately.
Without contradiction, this administration is poised to speedily transform God’s Own State, and Governor Ikpeazu has been in the vanguard of churning out new approaches that will serve as a springboard for a developed and prosperous State, one that will be a reference point among the comity of States in the nation.
