Abia State Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Obinna Oriaku has reiterated that no school teacher in Abia State government is being owed six months salaries as speculated at some quarters.
Speaking recently on the financial management of the State as it concerns salary payments, the Commissioner made it clear that in this month of January, Abia government has paid June, July and August salaries for secondary school teachers while their September salary payments commences today. He added that primary school teachers are currently being paid their November salaries which implies that they are only being owed December salaries.
Mr. Oriaku took time to educate Abia populace on the salary issue and informed that Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in Abia which accounts for about 70% of the total workforce are up-to-date with salary payment, maintaining that their January salaries are currently being processed.
He further explained why the schools are on strike, saying “the NUT Abia had before now made a demand for the payments of their union dues for the months of June and July. As at yesterday, we engaged them in a meeting and has resolved to pay the dues for them.”
The Finance boss also expressed hope that by next week, the NUT would call off the strike as normal academic activities will continue in earnest.
