2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS: THE PEOPLES’ HOPE BRIGHTENS
As Nigeria decides, what seems to be voter apathy earlier was dissipated by the massive turnout of people to cast their votes for their choice candidates starting from the president down to the federal house of representatives at the first phase of the 2019 general elections.
In Abia State, delays in the arrival of INEC officials and electoral materials nearly marred the elections if not for the time extended by INEC to augment for lost hours in some areas.
In Obingwa LGA, the home LGA of the indefatigable Governor of Abia state, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu Ph.D, where he voted with his amiable wife, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu at their Umuobiakwa polling unit in Ward 7 Abia Online crew were on ground, elections in various communities started quite early and was peaceful.
In Ukwa East LGA where former ASOPADEC chairman, Chief Emeka Stanley voted at his Obohia Ndoki ward 4 also was peaceful as same was applicable in Ukwa West LGA.
Aba North and South LGA’s experienced pockets of challenges in some areas due to late arrival of INEC officials and card reader malfunctions.
In Ohafia LGA, Abia Online gathered that the card reader did capture Rev. Umar Ukpai but he voted lately after several attempts as other communities within the local council experienced the same challenges.
In Bende LGA, voting did not commence early due to late arrival of materials.
However, Abia Online learnt that voting processes in the area was peaceful without any violence.
In Umuahia, the capital city of Abia, while voting exercise was conducted in an orderly manner, part of Umuahia North like Ohokobe, Ndume, Ihie, Umuafai did not vote at all after several ours of waiting for INEC officials to no avail.
In Isiala Ngwa North and South, some areas like Umunkpei, Agburuke Nsulu, witnessed massive turn up of voters, it was a pathetic story of some sort at Nsulu and most part of Isiala Ngwa North.
Speaking with newsmen at Isiala Ngwa North, former chairman of the council, Chief Ginger Onwusibe said that it was a deliberate attempt by INEC to disenfranchise the people of the south East because of its PDP strong hold.
At Ikwuano, after initial delays of INEC officials, voting commenced at about 4:30 pm.
Meanwhile, INEC has postponed elections in Rivers State, Anambara and Lagos states where there were cases of violence and ballot box snatching.
