A new Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. Ikechi Mgbuoji, has been sworn in by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu with a charge to develop policy that will ignite the interest of the youths and women in Agriculture not only as a profession but as a tool for economic development in the State.
Dr. Ikpeazu, while reminding the new Commissioner of the need to see his appointment as a call to service, enjoined him to bring his wealth of knowledge and experience to bear in the discharge of his duties.
The State Chief Executive, who reiterated his administration’s passion in leaving indelible marks in Agriculture, listed areas such as cash crops, oil palm, rice, cashew and cocoa as areas where he intends to make a mark and expressed the hope that Abia will soon become an urban and industrial City.
Gov. Ikpeazu disclosed that efforts are on to ensure that every Local Government Area in Abia State has not less than two cottage Agro-Processing industries that would make Abia flood Nigerian market with products such as Abia oil.
He further noted that Abia has grown from a non-rice producing State to become one of the leading States in rice production with Osikapa Abia and directed the Commissioner to ensure that every major City in the State will have their warehouses stocked with Osikapa Abia during the Yuletide to make it available for every citizen of the State.
In his acceptance speech, the newly sworn in Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. Ikechi Mgbuoji, while thanking the Governor for the appointment assured him of his readiness to work for the interest of Abia in the discharge of his duties.
