Maazi Ogbonnaya Okoro breaks new ground in educational publishing, empowering students with “Fiziksi” – a pioneering textbook teaching physics in Igbo.

In an unprecedented contribution to the African educational landscape, Maazi Ogbonnaya Okoro, a distinguished Nigerian linguist and educator, has authored and published the first physics textbook in the Igbo language, titled “Fiziksi”. Released on March 13, this groundbreaking work not only signifies a personal triumph for Okoro but also marks a pivotal moment for educational publishing across the continent.

Okoro’s journey into the realms of language preservation and educational reform began early, with his passion for the Igbo language sparking during his primary school years. His deep concern over the UNESCO-highlighted threats of language extinction propelled him towards this ambitious project. Okoro’s vision was clear: to enable the teaching of scientific subjects, particularly physics, in Igbo, thereby fostering a richer, more intuitive learning experience.

The translator’s inspiration was further fueled by observations of the global educational landscape. Noting the disparities in technological advancement between African students and their counterparts in nations where education is primarily conducted in indigenous languages, Okoro posited a transformative idea. He argued that learning in one’s native language not only deepens comprehension but also nurtures an independent, culturally informed mindset crucial for innovation.

The creation of “Fiziksi” involved extensive research, including consultations with existing physics textbooks and dictionaries to ensure the material was both accurate and accessible. Okoro employed various translation theories to craft a textbook that would serve both formal and informal learners, aiming to make complex physics concepts understandable and relatable to Igbo-speaking students.

Okoro envisions “Fiziksi” as a catalyst for what he terms an “African educational revolution,” challenging prevailing notions about the feasibility of teaching STEM subjects in African languages. By demonstrating that physics can be effectively taught in Igbo, Okoro ignites a conversation about the potential for similar translations across the continent. He believes that embracing indigenous languages in STEM education could transform Africa into a powerhouse of scientific and technological innovation, shifting the continent from consumption to production.

With over 15 years of experience in teaching and researching the Igbo language, as well as authoring numerous books approved for educational use across Nigeria, Okoro is no stranger to the challenges and rewards of language preservation. His work with Abibiman Publishers in the UK and his pioneering role as the BBC’s first Igbo translator underscore his dedication to promoting and revitalizing the Igbo language.

As “Fiziksi” begins to make its way into libraries, schools, and homes, Maazi Ogbonnaya Okoro’s achievement is celebrated not only as a personal victory but as a beacon of hope for the preservation of African languages and the enrichment of scientific education across the continent. Congratulations to Okoro on this monumental achievement.
