The government of Abia State has asked members of the public not to becloud the efforts of the government in other areas with issues bothering on workers salaries. The commissioner for finance, Mr. Obinna Oriaku made this in separate interactive radio programmes at the studios of Love 104.1 Fm and BCA 88.1 fm, Umuahia.
The commissioner expressed remorse that it was wrong for the government to owe workers but ensured that the public understood that the regime of economic crunch has left no part of life untouched including the payment of salaries in Nigeria. He noted that problem of payment of workers salaries was not peculiar to Abia alone as the receipt across the States of the federation has plunged the States into the ground. He reiterated his hope that better days are ahead.
The commissioner noted that Abia, with a workforce of about thirty thousand population has a total population of over five million people and pleaded that whereas the State has to fix the infrastructure used by the greater percentage of the population including the workers, it would be wrong for the State to pay only salaries without paying attention to fixing the infrastructural challenges of the State.
Mr. Oriaku disclosed that while December salaries of MDAs has started dropping, there has been works in the pipeline to shore up the payment of parastatals to be at par with their contemporaries in the ministries.
He maintained that Abia has a clean sheet as regards the disbursement of the bailout fund and the Paris Club refund. Abia has remained the most frugal in the spending of resources within her reach.
