The Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Onuoha Ogwe has inaugurated Special COVID-19 Mobile Courts with a charge to the Magistrates to impose reasonable fines or Community Service on offenders.
Justice Ogwe, while speaking at the inauguration, disclosed that mobile court is not a new court in itself but one meant to handle cases arising from the Coronavirus in the State especially movement of people.
According to him, the Courts were set up to ensure that Government laws are respected while the focus should be on non custodial sentences.
Ogwe stress that the Courts should concentrate only on persons who breach the State’s Covid-19 regulations.
He implored the Magistrates of the Court to be sensitive and patriotic as well as to keep an eye on their supportive staff to ensure that they do not make corrupt arrangements.
The Chief Judge while reminding them that they were chosen because of their credibility, told them that all revenues realized should be paid into the State Government accounts.
Responding on behalf of the other Magistrates, His Worship, Lawrence Okite of Ohafia zone thanked the Chief Judge for finding them fit to serve and promised to discharge their duties in line with the aspirations of the State Government.
The Special COVID-19 Mobile Courts meant to try those who flout Government’s directives regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in the State and will cover the three zones of the State.
has His Worship, Emmanuel Ukaegbu in charge of Aba zone while His Worship, Chuks Nwankpa is in charge of Umuahia zone.
ABIA ONLINE reports that the Honorable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abia State, Uche Ihediwa and the Secretary to Government, Barrister Chris Ezem Honorable Commissioner for Homeland Security, Prince Dan Okoli as well as other top government officials were present at the inauguration.
