Abia State Polytechnic, Aba is unique in diverse ways. Situated at the heart of Enyimba city, it is a great citadel of learning with a heterogeneous student population. Abia Poly, as it is commonly known, was once renowned for its quality graduates churned out to contribute their quota in the different facets of our national fabric. But things went awry; things fell apart as the cankerworm of corruption and mismanagement crept in. As a result, the values for which reputable Abia Poly was highly respected in the committee of polytechnics gradually were relegated as relics of good tales of the proverbial good old days. The need for a messiah who would redeem the glorious heritage of academic excellence of the institution was common knowledge.
On the nick of time, the long-awaited champion of the people appeared in the scene to salvage the ivory tower from cascading in an abyss. No sooner had Governor Okezie Ikpeazu emerged as the helmsman of Abia State than there appeared a light at the end of the tunnel, a ray of hope that the era of intellectual degeneration will surely be upturned. With his posture and disposition towards all sectors of the society and given his penchant for education, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu needed no political grandstanding to initiate the necessary changes ranging from changing the management of the institution and the constituting relevant committees to unravel the underlying challenges holding the institution at the jugular with a view to dovetailing to long-lasting solutions.
These measures taken by the Governor Ikpeazu-led administration have started paying off! Assessing from the standpoint of the crop of persons occupying the key management positions, we find that Prof. Eboh and his team of erudite scholars of proven integrity and intellect has proven their mettle beyond doubts. The insightful administrative steps taken recently by Prof. Eboh is a testimonial that Governor Ikpeazu’s choice of his selection was hinged on meritocracy rather than nepotism.
During the recent verification exercise for the staff of Abia Poly, a mind-boggling vista of cankerworms was brought to the fore as it was discovered that sixteen non-tutorial staff possessed forged senior secondary school (WAEC) certificates, as confirmed by the examination body. Needless to say, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ikechi Mgbeoji has approved the dismissal of any member of staff found culpable. The hardworking Commissioner for Education has continued to spare no pain in the pursuit of Governor Ikpeazu’s vision for the education sector. He deserves uncommon commendable from all quarters.
The Abia narrative under Governor Okezie Ikpeazu is showing what purposeful leadership entails. It should be reiterated that a responsive government should be result-oriented and not a jamboree of political jobbers. The vigour and passion of the Ikpeazu team has been awesome, and this is not surprising since Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has maintained a track record of a pacesetter par excellence.
It could be re-emphasized for the umpteenth time, that education is very germane for the development of Abia state. So far, the results of Abia State in external or national competitions and examinations, which serve as an index of achievement, is very impressive. Students from Abia State and from schools in Abia State have continued to tower at the echelon of performance at these examinations. It is not yet uhuru, as we say, so it is commendable that the government is not resting on its oars.
The destination sought after is to make Abia State an edu-tourist haven of both national and international recognition. With Governor Ikpeazu’s innovative approach, the goal is not far-fetched; we are so close to the halcyon shores!
