Amidst what seems to be a growing apathy and lack of interest by prospective candidiates to chose Education courses for study in Universities in Nigeria, the Abia State University (ABSU) under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Distinguished Professor O. M. Ogbulu, is set to roll out measures that will change this ugly narrative in order to make education courses more attractive and increase enrollments.
This was part of the outcome of the interractive meeting between Management and academics from the Faculty of Education during a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor.
Some of these measures includes introduction of new courses in Education that will make graduates self employable, massive publicity and marketing of Education courses, provision of Education laboratories, full accreditation of courses and others.
Receiving the high powered team of Distinguished academics from the faculty, the Vice Chancellor expressed delight at the visit, especially with a former Vice Chancellor, Professor Mkpa A. Mkpa as part of the team.
He noted that the issue of growing lack of interest to study education courses by students is a reflection of the value system of the society, that has relegated teaching profession to the background and celebrates wealth above any other thing, but added that management, in collaboration with the Faculty will implement all the measures proposed, to improve enrollment for education courses in the University.
Earlier, the Dean, Faculty of Education, Professor Rock Eze, explained, that they came to congratulate Prof. Ogbulu on his appointment and to pledge their full support for the administration.
Also speaking, a former Vice Chancellor of the University, and Chairman, Abia State Independent Electoral commission ( ABSIEC), Professor Mkpa A. Mkpa, pointed out that the appointment of the Vice Chancellor came at the right time, when people needed a restoration of hope, confidence and trust.
The revered academic added that the declining interest in studying Education is becoming a global phenomenon, and this he said, is due to the negative impression about the teaching profession especially in Nigeria, and profered solutions on how management could tackle the problem in ABSU.
In a vote of thanks, Professor C. C. Ekennia, thanked the VC for granting them audience and creating a fertile, congenial atmosphere for interaction which he prayed should continue.
ABIA ONLINE gathered that all the Management team, including the Registrar, Dr Achor Elendu, Bursar, Chuks Nwogwugwu, and the University Librarian, Professor Udo Nwokocha were present at the meeting.
