Defence Minister Matawalle Criticises Northern Elders for Anti-Tinubu Stance

In a potent response to the Northern Elders Forum’s recent disapproval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, has issued a scathing rebuke, calling the forum “political paperweights” and a “political burden” on the North. The NEF had previously stated their disappointment in President Tinubu, voicing a preference for leadership that would be “more inclusive, less controversial, and more aligned with the interests of all regions of the country.”

Matawalle’s press statement, released on Saturday, highlighted his displeasure with the NEF’s comments, which he considered “reprehensible and naïve.” He accused the forum of seeking political relevance through destructive means, thereby threatening the political unity and cohesion of Nigerians.

“The so-called NEF is embarking on a destructive journey that could bring the North into disrepute for the group’s personal and selfish gains,” Matawalle stated, condemning their actions and their failure to engage constructively with the government.

Matawalle also defended President Tinubu’s record, pointing out the ongoing development efforts in the North and across Nigeria that the NEF has failed to acknowledge or support. He critiqued the elders’ group for not taking a more proactive stance in addressing regional issues and for not seeking direct dialogue with government officials.

As tensions rise, the minister urged the Northern Elders Forum to shift their focus towards fostering unity and cooperation within the North to support President Tinubu’s efforts in driving the country towards a prosperous future. He encouraged the members of the NEF to reconsider their current stance and collaborate with the government in moving Nigeria forward.

In his closing remarks, Matawalle emphasized the importance of unity and collective progress, advising the NEF and similar groups to support the current administration and contribute positively to the nation’s development.
