The Federal government has been called upon to intervene in the growing erosion challenges in Abia State.
The Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu made the call while receiving in audience, the House Committee on Environment and Habitat, led by Hon. Obinna Chidoka, who were in the State for a working visit.
Dr. Ikpeazu said there was need for Nigeria to have a functional policy on environment to restrain people from involving in activities detriment to the environment, he stressed on the importance of being pro-active in controlling erosion in Nigeria. He decried the manace of erosion in various parts of the State as well as the activities of miners that have contributed to the deplorable situation of the Abia environment and therefore expressed confidence that the delegation’s findings and recommendations to the Federal House of Representatives would assist Abia a lot. Dr. Ikpeazu, who said he has no doubt that they will do a nice job also assured them of his support.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Chairman, House Committee on Environment and Habitat, Hon. Obinna Chidoka said they were in the State for a working visit as part of their oversight functions. He disclosed that they would inspect the work the Ecological fund office was doing and look into the environmental challenges of the State, stating that more funds should be dedicated to the South-East.
Hon. Chidioka observed that the South- East is suffering from serious erosion menace and assured that they will report their findings to the House, expressing hope that the outcome will be included in the next
