Medical practioners have been advised to be committed in saving lives and shun the act of referring government patients to their private hospitals.
The Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu said this while receiving the leadership of the Nigeria Medical Association, Abia State Chapter in Government House, Umuahia.
The Governor used the opportunity to stress the need for the return of Environmental Health Officers to the rural communities to enhance health in the State. He also informed that the State has ordered for medical equipment that would help handle the tertiary healthcare of the people.
Dr. Ikpeazu encouraged the medical practitioners to meet with the Board of Internal Revenue to agree on the better modalities of payment of taxes as they complained of multiple taxation, stating that the government was doing everything to streamline tax collections in the State.
He enjoined them to write a letter, detailing the issues of the land allocation they talked about and congratulated them on their election.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the NMA, Dr. Prince Onyemachi appreciated the ongoing road constructions and renovations by the Governor and pledged the unalloyed support of the association to him. He said they were in his office to present to him the new Executives of the association and promised to partner with him in free medical scheme.
He urged the Governor to look into the issue of multiple taxation as it affects members of the noble profession and pleaded that Land be provided for construction of their Secretariat.
