The health of the citizens should be taken seriously by any pro-people government. More so, as healthy citizenry has multiplier beneficial implications on the socioeconomic performances of any State, strongly supporting the popular maxim that “Health is Wealth”.
Furthermore, with the alarming figure of high mortality rate most especially in sub-Saharan Africa which our dear nation is inclusive, there is no argument that it is not yet Uhuru for the Nigerian Health Sector. For instance, the outbreak of some communicable diseases which always put both the States and Federal Governments on their toes trying to put a stop with absent of adequate preparatory steps to mitigate such occurrences is always a source of concern.
These are pointers to the fact that there should be increase budgetary allocation in the sector for research, training and retraining of personnel, furnishing and rehabilitation of the health facilities to meet the needs of the growing population of Nigeria and ensuring quality healthcare delivery which will in turn, accelerate growth and in our dying economy.
Abia State, since the advent of the present administration has made efforts to improve on the Healthcare delivery to her citizens. It is on record that before the advent of the present administration, most of the healthcare facilities were in comatose; some were under lock and key while others were mere drug dispensing units.
It is in that light that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu care with redemptive approach to reverse this downward trend. Firstly, a renowned medical practitioner from overseas, Dr. Gozie John Ahukanna was appointed to leverage on his robust experiences and contact to bring a turnaround to the State’s health sector. He has within the time under review initiated so many reforms that has improved on the State Healthcare delivery. As such, international partnership with topnotch concerned agencies has been nurtured to help take the Health sector to the halcyon shores. This have seen the State take delivery of state-of-the-art healthcare equipment from within and outside the shores of Nigeria to improve the health sector.
The State’s general hospital located at hospital road Aba, which hitherto trains RN candidates, with an age long moribundity have been rehabilitated and functional while other general hospitals are currently being built across the State. It is therefore not an exaggeration to state that this will exceedingly improve on the efficiency and effectiveness of Abia’s Health system as affordable Healthcare is now at the reach of average Abian.
The performance of this administration and the great investments been made in the sector by the Governor Ikpeazu’s adminstration is a testimony that the wellbeing of Abians ranks first in the priority list of Governor Ikpeazu’s administration and the need for continual support and solidarity with these adminstration.
