It is common knowledge that Nigeria political leaders from time to time attempt to carry out one form of empowerment or the other to their constituents. Most of the empowerment were focused on the youths, who seem to be in the larger number of those who are not seriously engaged in one business or the other.
However, this empowerment has been done in several ways and styles, hence, Abia State like other States has witnessed many kinds of empowerment from political leaders of various levels; from the Governors to Senators, House of Representative members, House of Assembly members, Commissioners, Local government Chairmen even to Councillors.
It has been observed that many politicians take pleasure in giving the youths tricycles, known as keke and motorcycles, popularly called Okada as well as vehicles. Some also dole out cash to empower the youths. In his campaign promises, Abia Governor, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu vowed to promote the ‘can-do spirit’ do spirit’ and entrepreneurial instinct of Abia people, especially the youths. Hence, he has embarked on many projects in that regard.
Recently in a speech, the Governor stressed thus: “Our administration views job creation and skills development as necessary ingredients for our integrated economic development agenda as availability of relevant skill sets in our environment will naturally lead to more investment and further reduction in unemployment related criminal activities”One of the empowerment programmes of the Governor is the Multi Skills and Entrepreneurial Centre located along Old Express, in Obingwa Local Government Area of the State. This centre houses trainees in several vocations, including Electrical Installation & maintenance, Modern Furniture Making, Fabrications, Construction & Modern Brick Making among others.
The viability of this Multi Skills and Acquisition Centre has attracted the attention of the Federal Government to the level the Federal government decide to use the centre to train N Power students, who specializes in learning building technology (N Build). So far, about 60 beneficiaries of N Build are currently undergoing training at the centre.
More interestingly, the Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Job Creation, Mr. Afolabi Imokhuede visited the Centre recently. Mr. Imokhuede, who described the centre as a world-class centre expressed happiness that the trainees are not just learning the skills but have a platform to apply it. According to him, “the competence they would gain is a world-class competence,” adding that they have double privilege of learning the curriculum and the practical.
Apart from the Presidency, the leadership of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria also visited to see things by themselves and confirmed the centre as suitable for training builders.
In an interview conducted by Abia Online, the C.E.O of the Academy/Milti Skill Acquisition Centre, Mr. Endi Ezengwa explained that people are trained in different skills there. He lauded Governor Ikpeazu for his good vision of empowering Abia youths through training in vocations, revealing that the Governor’s vision for that kind of empowerment center predates election and stressed the need to return him to power in 2019 for Abia people to maximize the plans of the Governor in that regard.
Mr. Endy Ezengwa also disclosed that the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo is being expected soon in Abia State to flag off the N Power Build centre at the Multi Skills and Entrepreneurial Center, informing that Governor Ikpeazu has equipped the centre up to an international standard.
Abia people and residents are therefore enjoined to appreciate the good intentions of the Governor and support him in building Abia economy through empowerment.
