MOTHER WRITES ABIA JUDICIAL PANEL, NARRATES HOW HER SON DIED IN POLICE CUSTODY IN UZUOKALI

A mother Mrs. Charity Ohalete Ugwuiro of Umuozoko Ngwu Uzuakoli Bende LGA, Abia State has written to Abia State Judicial Panel o Inquiry on Police Brutality in Umuahia over the suffering and hardship currently being experience as a result of the death of her son who died 8th December 2018 while in Police custody.

According to Mrs. Ugwuiro, her son Mr. Onyekachi Ohalete Ugwuiro was arrested by the Uzuakoli police division while helping the railway Corporation dispose off unwanted materials across the Uzuakoli Railway station.

The documents revealed that her son died on 8th December 2018 in the police custody and that 2 years after the death of Mr. Onyekachi Ohalete Ugwuiro, the Police have not released the body to the family for burial.

Available information revealed that Mrs. Charity has obtained an affidavit from the court to facilitate the release of the body to the family which she has used in writing to the state Commissioner of Police on 4th November 2019 but the body is yet to be released.

During the deliberation of the petition before the Abia State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality, the police alleged that Mr. Onyekachi Ohalete committed suicide in Police custody. The allegation of the police warranted the visit of the Abia State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality members to Uzukaoli Police Headquarters.
