Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Wednesday morning

1. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state has suspended its national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole. The State chairman, Anselm Ojezua, who made this known in a statement on a Tuesday night said Oshiomhole‘s suspension followed a vote of no confidence passed on him by chairmen of the APC in the 18 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.
2. The Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and National Commissioners of INEC were on Tuesday teargassed in Kogi State by some police officers a stakeholders’ meeting/signing of peace accord among political parties and candidates, organised by INEC. This happened when those suspected to be thugs used force to prevent the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Natasha Akpoti, from entering the venue of the event.
3. The convener of the Concerned Nigerians Group, Deji Adeyanju, has alleged that some top government sympathizers attempted to bribe his group to stop its planned protest against the detention of Omoyele Sowore, a co-convener of RevolutionNow movement.
He made the disclosure on Tuesday during a protest in front of the Headquarters of the Department of State Services, DSS, at Aso Drive in Abuja, displaying the said sum before the media. Many journalists were, however, injured as DSS operatives allegedly opened fire on them.
4. The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has described the previous government of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from 1999 to 2015 as irresponsible and spendthrift. He said that it was the pursuit of good governance that brought the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari to power in 2015. Tinubu also said that the Bukola Saraki led 8th National Assembly was controlled by reactionary elements that fought for business as usual and against reform. He spoke at a public presentation of a book in Abuja.
5. The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has disqualified the Deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 16, 2019 governorship election in Bayelsa State. The court disqualified Senator Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, over false information in his CF0001 form submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commissioner (INEC) to contest the election. Delivering the judgment, Justice Inyang Ekwo, said there was no nexus in the name on his school-leaving certificate, first degree (BA), Masters and the affidavits he swore to correct his name, hence disqualified him for proving false information.
6. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state has expelled its former governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. This was disclosed in a statement by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Chris Nehikhare.
Ize-Iyamu’s expulsion followed his refusal to confirm or refute his rumoured defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He will no longer participate in any PDP related activities with immediate effect.
7. Senator Sabi Abdullahi representing Niger North Senatorial district has sponsored a private bill to tackle hate speeches and other social media related contents considered antagonistic to the interest of Nigerian society. The lawmaker who was Senate Spokesman in the 8th Senate and now Deputy Chief Whip wants the National Assembly to establish a Commission with administrative structures to deal with hate speeches in Nigeria. The bill titled: “National Commission for the Prohibition of Hate Speeches (Est., etc) bill, 2019 (SB. 154)” passed through first reading on Tuesday.
8. Nigeria will begin their quest to be at the next Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, when they take on Benin Republic on Wednesday, in their qualifying fixture. The Super Eagles go into the match against their West African neighbours in fine form, having held Ukraine and Brazil to credible draws in recent friendly matches. The game will be played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital. Kick-off time is 5pm.
9. The Nigerian Senate has given its Appropriations committees two weeks ultimatum to work on the 2020 Budget and lay it on 26th November so it can be passed before the end of next month. President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan has insisted that the resolve of the National Assembly to revert to the January to December budget cycle remained sacrosanct.
10. Police in Benin City on Tuesday evening, repelled an attempt by armed robbers to attack the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Benin branch. The ugly incident, which happened at King Square (the city centre), witnessed an attempt by the robbery gang who tried to break into the bank when a bullion van carrying cash to an unknown commercial bank was about leaving the CBN premises. The hoodlums were, however, repelled by the armed police security team attached to the bank. The exchange of gunfire between the bank security and the robbers that lasted few minutes forced the robbers to retreat and escaped, while people and motorists around scampered for safety.
