The State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Kanelechi Nwangwa has reiterated that Government would not back out in the clamp down of substandard schools in the State as that would bring about the much needed reforms in the education sector.
To this end, Government wouldl soon bring in taskforce that would ensure compliance to the illegal schools earmarked for closure in the State.
Dr. Nwangwa was speaking in an interaction with news men in his office in Umuahia, revealing that about 50 closed schools were still operating illegally.
He informed that his team would soon embark on massive supervision of schools across the State to ensure that the closed schools do not operate and the one approved were living up to expectations.
The enforcement of Government directives to that regard, according to the Commissioner, was necessary because of the level of compliance to the current closure of substandard private schools in the State,adding that some of the schools earmarked for closure were now trying to meet up with the standard as some have complied by relocating to their permanent sites.
Nwangwa explained that the essence of clamping down on illegal schools was to ensure that quality education was maintained among the schools in Abia State.
He emphasized that proper education must provide pupils with affective, psychomotor and cognitive domains, pointing out that the closed down schools lack the necessary atmosphere for learning and were not able meet up with other standards of running a school.
He said the State Government has also embarked on training and retraining of teachers in the State to enhance their capacity and productivity and would carry out more training in collaboration with the Australian educators, who were already partnering the State Government in continuing teachers’ education.
