The Abia State Covid-19 Joint Taskforce, Sunday embarked on enforcement of the lockdown directive of the State Government as churches complied with the total lockdown order.
The team was led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Homeland Security, Chief Sopuruchi Bekee, in company of the State Head of Service, Sir Onyii Wama, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media and Publicity, Mr. Ubani Newman Ubani, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, M. A Jatau, Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations, Abia State Police Command, Mr. Alfa Jibrin, Representatives of the Army, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), among others.
The team visited some Churches to enforce compliance including St. Finbars Catholic Church, Matar Dei, Streams of Joy International Church as well as some motor parks in Umuahia metropolis where it observed that there was near perfect compliance with the directive.
Whereas many of the churches visited did not open for service, the only one seen where not more than the approved thirty member gathering while it was also discovered that they clearly observed the social distancing policy.
One of the churches visited observed their Sunday service through online streaming where members worshiped at the comfort of their homes.
The team sealed a popular supermarket at Isi-Gate Umuahia for flouting the closedown order while some vehicles were impounded as well as ensured that trailers with anything outside the approved items such as food, phamaciticals, petroleum products and their like were delayed until around 7pm in compliance with the policy of Government.
At the Abia/Imo boundary, Onuimo, the team team was informed that a trailer ran into the security team on the road block as the driver claimed break failure for the accident, although no live was lost, some were injured and are receiving treatment in a hospital as at the time of this report.
ABIA ONLINE observed that churches were closed for service while the road was relatively empty as many residents observed the sit at home order.
Chief Sopuruchi Bekee, however was impressed with the overall attitude of the residents of Umuahia.
