Unical students lament extortion of money by lecturers, HODs
The students of the department of Theatre Arts and Media Studies, University of Calabar, have complaints of extortion from various heads of the faculty.
The affected students, DAILY POST investigations revealed are Direct Entry (DE) students.
They have alleged that the institution collected additional acceptance fees of N15, 000 after paying the recommended amount of N5, 000 when they initially gained admission into the varsity.
Some of the DE students said the additional acceptance fees came in after they haD graduated from 200 Level to the next level which is 300 Level, “When we were admitted into UNICAL, we were asked to pay N5, 000 as acceptance fees and we paid.
“Now, we’ve graduated into the next class, the Department later increased the acceptance fees to N20, 000 for the current 200 Level students. The N20, 000 was meant to be paid for the 200 Level DE students, but the department through a voice memo asked us, the 300 Level to pay additional N15, 000 when we are no longer new students.
The Head of Department (HOD), Theatre Arts and Media Studies, Dr. (Mrs.) Brenda Akpan, said she had no idea about the extortion of money but directed newsmen to contact other heads in the faculty.
“I don’t know anything about it and I won’t talk anything I don’t know. Go to Bassey Andah’s Institute, you will see the Director of the Faculty, his name is Oyeto Okpara or you can go in and look for Mr. Ibok Ekpenyong, they are the people in charge of those things,” Akpan said.
When checked on the aforementioned offices and the persons, none of them were on seat at the time of filing this report. Sadly, the students are lamenting over the situation.
