Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has assured traditional rulers in the State that the State Executive Council would meet over their request to jettison the proposed airport project with a view to deciding on whether to continue with the project or not.
The Governor was responding to the request made by the the royal fathers who had urged him to jettison the idea of the proposed Abia Airport Project and instead channel the proposed funds for the completion of ongoing road projects in the State.
Receiving in audience the Principal Officers of Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chairmen of the Traditional Rulers Council in the 17 Local Government Areas of the State, Governor Ikpeazu charged them to advise their youths and subjects to refrain from violence in especially the forthcoming Local Government elections in the State.
He said the reason for allowing the conduct of Local Government elections was to deepen democracy and create opportunities for more youths to participate in governance.
He enjoined them to protect the customs and traditions of the people and used the forum to applaud them for the peaceful way they selected their executives in the 17 Local Government Areas.
The Governor who described Traditional Rulers as strategic partners with the State Government, advised them to be vigilant to avoid any form of uprising in their domains.
Earlier, the Chairman, Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Joseph Nwabekee appreciated the the Governor for inaugurating the council amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
He commended the Governor for his various achievements in the State, noting that he has done well in all facets of the economy, numerous road infrastructure and other projects across the State.
The Royal Fathers urged the Governor to jettison the proposed plan for Abia Airport Project and instead channel the funds earmarked for it to complete the ongoing road projects in the State including some portions of the dilapidated Aba-Port Harcourt and Aba-Ikot Ekpene Highways.
According to them, fixing the roads would boost the economy of the State.
