Abia Tackles Pension Payment Issues with New Help Desk

Umuahia, Abia State – In a decisive move to rectify omissions and other concerns raised during the recent pension arrears payments, the Abia State Government has established a Help Desk within the Ministry of Finance. This initiative, announced by Commissioner for Information and Culture Prince Okey Kanu, underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring no retiree is overlooked in the pension disbursement process.

During a press briefing on the outcomes of the latest Executive Council meeting, Prince Kanu emphasized the importance of the Help Desk in streamlining pension payments and resolving any discrepancies swiftly. Moreover, in a significant policy shift aimed at further supporting retirees, Governor Alex Otti has mandated that pensioners receive their monthly dues concurrently with state civil servants, setting the payment date on the 28th of each month.

The state’s efforts to improve financial administration and transparency extend beyond pension payments. A forthcoming Contributory Pension Scheme is set to be introduced for civil servants, marking a progressive step towards sustainable pension management.

In addition to financial reforms, the state government has committed to substantial infrastructural improvements. Among these is the approval for the reconstruction of the 3.5-kilometre Osisioma-Ekeakpara road in the Osisioma Local Government Area. Utilizing cement pavement technology, this project aims to ensure the road’s longevity and reliability, reflecting the administration’s focus on durable development.

Financial transparency and responsibility have been hallmarks of Governor Otti’s approach to pension arrears. Commissioner for Finance Mr Mike Akpara disclosed that over N9 billion has been allocated to pension payments, a move that has garnered appreciation from the Nigerian Union of Pensioners in the state. This financial undertaking has not only settled longstanding arrears but also highlighted the government’s resolve to honour its commitments to retired workers.

The administration’s transparency extends to its public engagements, with Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, confirming the thoroughness and verifiability of the pension payments. This meticulous approach ensures that all concerns and anomalies are addressed promptly, reinforcing the government’s dedication to equity and fairness.

Looking ahead, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, announced readiness for the ANPA-free medical mission, anticipating an increase in surgeries due to heightened public interest. Furthermore, the state has received approval to launch a two-year certificate program in community healthcare, aiming to bolster healthcare provision across communities.

Through these comprehensive measures, the Abia State Government demonstrates its unwavering commitment to addressing the immediate concerns of its retirees, while also laying the groundwork for substantial long-term improvements in infrastructure and healthcare.
