The management of Health Institutions in Abia State have been charged to initiate ways to improve internally generated revenue as a way of helping the state to tackle numerous challenges bothering on quality services to the people.
The Hon. Commissioner for Health, Dr. John Ahukannah, said this while receiving the management of the college of health science management and technology Aba on a courtesy visit. He reiterated that Abia state government led by Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has much on its hand ranging from road construction, quality health provisions, huge salary burden while repositioning the economy of the state which he said demands a huge financial commitment.
In his address, the rector Abia state college of health science management and technology, Prof. Chidi Ezeama enumerated the challenges of the college to include, non scheduling of the college for pension stressing that the present monopolytechnic status of the school is limiting the school from benefitting from international donor agencies. He also said that inadequate internally generated revenue hinders it from meeting up with its salary obligations.
He informed the commissioner that the college has received accreditation for their computer science course and medical laboratory courses as well as upgrading to offer HND in public health nursing. He appealed to the government to assist the college to upgrade to polytechnics from mono-polytechnics and schedule it for pensions.
While responding, Dr Ahukannah said that ” One of the ways to improve IGR is to block revenue leakages,initiate programmes that can open more revenue windows. More revenue will help to defray salary as well as administrative bills”
The Honourable commissioner assured them that the state government is working on a bill to convert the institution from mono polytechnics to polytechnics, he assured them that when ever this process is completed, the college will acquire a higher status to attract international donor agencies to it.
Dr. Ahukannah while commending the college for its effort to earn the accreditation on computer science and laboratory courses as well as upgrading to offer the public health nursing to HND, assured the college management that the state government is currently working on scheduling the college for pensions and also for their salary to beat par with other institutions.
The permanent Secretary, Mr Nkwachukwu Agomoh and other directors of the ministry of health were present during the visit.
