The 17 Local Government Chairmen elects, their Deputies and Councillors have been sworn-into various offices.

Addressing the new executive Chairmen, the Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu charged them to look inwards and identify those areas their Local Government Councils have comparative advantages over others, such as rice production, Farming, oil & gas.

He said that through that, they would work out their destinies by their hands as that is the only way to tackle the current recession. He encouraged the new LGA functionaries to key into his administration’s 5 pillars of development so as to drag development to their areas.

Dr. Ikpeazu saluted the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) for looking inwards and sourcing all their electoral materials used for the election in Abia.
It helped to cut down expenses to as low as 50%, as over seventy percent (70%) of materials used for the election were locally made. He urged all to join forces with him to wage war against enemies of the State, who condemn everything Abia. He called for cooperation by all to make Abia better.

According to the Governor, it was convenient for him to run Local Government system with Transitional Committee members but in order to take governance to the grassroots and ensure that developments get to the Local Government Areas.

“Running the Government with transition Chairmen was convenient considering the cost of conducting election but to deepen democracy and to make sure dividends of democracy get to the grassroot, it was good and better to conduct Local Government election”

He challenged the Deputy Chairmen to be loyal to their Chairmen. Councillors should team-up with the executive arm of their Councils to fashion out agenda that will make the administrations to succeed.

In a vote of thanks on behalf of others, the Umuahia North Chairman, Hon. Nwachukwu Chidiebere thanked the Governor for approving the conduct of the election. He also appreciated the people for electing them and promised to support the Governor as well as help him to take Abia to a greater height.
