The wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu has advocated for an amendment of the Child Rights Law of Abia State 2006 so that the laws and policies have a shape that suits the changing times.
Mrs. Ikpeazu, through her Twitter handle said she had earlier met with the leadership of the Child Protection Network of Abia State on Wednesday, and was excited to learn about the progress made so far and the possibilities of what could be done.
According to her: “The outcome of all advocacies within the #16daysofActivism is to strengthen our protection and response systems, and while we advocate about Gender-Based Violence we must also recognize that children are also victims of violence.
She added: “The outcomes of today’s meeting are gearing toward a review to the child rights law of Abia State, strengthening the Child Justice Systems and rules of engagement for family courts, and SafeGuarding Policy for Abia State.
While I was advocating for the #VAPP law that has been passed in Abia State, I also advocated for the creation of family courts, these reviews and frameworks are essential to the development of our protection systems.”
The Abia First Lady expressed optimism that in the coming months the State will come up with substantial guiding principles and engage with stakeholders to formulate policies that will protect the lives and future of the children.
