The wife of the State Governor, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu has been honoured as the Number One Nurse in Abia by the Forum of Local Government Nurses and Midwifery of Nigeria.
Speaking at the association’s gala night held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, Mrs. Ikpeazu, noted that qualitative healthcare is a universal right and a responsibility of all to work collectively to achieve it.
The Wife of the Governor, who described the choice of Abia State by the Forum of Local Government Nurses and Midwifery of Nigeria for their conference with the theme ‘Mobilizing the Public and Private Sector Towards Universal Health Coverage” as beneficial to Abians hailed them for the choice of Abia State for the National Conference
The Abia First Lady maintained that good health remains the basic platform for the achievement of all other social development goals, because it ensures human well-being and productivity.
She however, charged the Forum to ensure that the outcome of their deliberations would make the health care delivery systems in Nigeria great and thanked them for the award as the number one nurse in Abia.
Speaking also, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Primary Health Care, Mrs. Uloma Anosike stated that the focus of the conference was to reduce the mortality rate across the country.
Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the Forum, Comrade Obafemi Agbede, explained that the forum was formed in 1996 with the objective of providing quality health care services to patients and to promote the skills of the Nigerian Nurses and Midwifery.
She commended the contributions of the wife of the Governor to health care delivery in the state especially through her pet project, the Vicar Hope Foundation.
Comrade Obafemi who identified shortage of nurses in as one of the problem one of the problem the forum have in achieving the universal health coverage in Nigeria, appealed for the employment of more nurses to enable them make the needed impact in the country’s health sector.
Others who spoke at the event including the State Commissioner for Health who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Reverend Ernest Osuji and his Information counterpart, Chief John Okiyi, want nurses in the State to serve with respect and empathy adding that the state would always accord Nurses and Midwifery the benefits they deserve.
