The State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Solomon Ogunji has commended the Aba community for the level of coorperation noticed in the clean up excercise for the last monthly environmental sanitation for 2019 held today.
Speaking while monitoring the monthly environmental sanitation excercise for December, the Commissioner expressed joy for appreciable level of compliance and coorperation, saying that most of the shops that used to be opened during previous excercises were closed in compliance with the directives of the State government.
Dr. Solomon Ogunji, who used the opportunity to inspect the ongoing desilting of manholes and drainages in Aba, frowned at the manner many households around Kingdom Hall Avenue, Ogwe Crescent, off Umuocham Road and World Bank in Aba decided to channel their waste and sewage water to the street and drains in disregard to the Abia State Environmental Law. He said that the Ministry of Environment has decided to serve abatement notices to all the households in the area and would subsequently take them to sanitation court.
He informed that the Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu had directed that the
manholes be opened and serious desilting carried out in the area, following application written by the Chairman of the neighborhood association in the area. He disclosed that while the government was doing the tunnel desilting, the individuals are mandated to carry out drainage desilting, maintaining that
desilting and cleaning up of the area would take away flood in the neighborhood of Umuocham and World Bank area.
The Commissioner also commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for his determination in achieving sustained cleanliness of the State and urged Aba and entire Abia residents to sustain the environmental cleanliness of the State even beyond the Yuletide.
Reacting to the environmental situation of World Bank, Aba, the Chairman, Kingdom Hall Avenue, World Bank Neighborhood Association, Dr. Iyke Uchendu lamented that most of the residents are at the verge of parking out because of the flood caused by people building on the drainages.
He pleaded with the government to intervene and prevail on people to channel their sewage accordingly.
