Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has expressed the readiness of the government to partner with the Rural Access & Mobility Project (RAMP) to ensure rural roads in the State are fixed and agricultural produce transported from hinter lands to cities.
Receiving in audience a delegation of RAMP led by its National Coordinator, Mr. Ubandoma Ularamu in Govt. House, Umuahia, the Governor said his administration shares with the objectives of RAMP especially, as it concerns Abia, noting that road construction & rehabilitation is one of the enablers of the five pillars of his administration. He stressed that without good roads, trade & commerce, Small & Medium Scale Enterprises, as well as agriculture, oil & gas cannot thrive.
Dr. Ikpeazu assured them that the State is ready to do all that are required to meet up with the criteria of becoming a benefiting State. He described RAMP as a major development paradigm that needs to be appreciated.
The Governor assured that Abia would go back to its leading position in cocoa production if the rural roads are fixed, adding that sustainable development must be driven to rural areas to ensure value-chain is achieved and bring about development.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of RAMP, Mr. Ubandoma Ularamu said they were in the State to do a final touch on the readiness of Abia State participation in the project. He disclosed that the are two criterion for qualification, informing that Abia State has substantially qualified for participation and now awaits final screening by the World Bank. The National Co-ordinator pointed the objectives of RAMP to include; reduction of time in transportation, creating access to markets, schools and hospitals as well as promoting sustainable access roads to rural dwellers.
