Students of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike MOUAU are turning up in their numbers to get tested for the Abia State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS Voluntary Counseling and Testing programme going on in the University.
Dr. Okerie Gideon, who confirmed the scenario to Abia Online crew, revealed that the response of students was massive and expressed the hope that with the rate of turnout, ABSACA would hit her target of getting about 7000 youths counselled and tested.
He urged other students and staff to avail themselves of this opportunity to get tested stressing that it is better to know one’s HIV status than live in ignorance and fear of the unknown.
Also speaking, Mr She’d and Ogbonna Chinwe disclosed that the exercise has witnessed a massive turn out of both staff and students of the University. They explained that those who have tested positive have been referred for proper care where they would access free medication.
On their part, some students who participated in the Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VTC) including Chima Joseph, Chinenye Nnachi, Uwaeme Bruno, noted that they now have a sense of fulfilment knowing their HIV status.
While thanking Abia State Government for the privilege of being tested free of charge, they advised their fellow students to utilize the opportunity to get tested and share in their own confidence in knowing their own HIV status.
