Abia Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has commiserated with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (N.U.J.), Abia State Council over the attack on the Union’s secretariat last recently.
The Governor described the attack as unfortunate and thanked God for intervening in what would have resulted to a blood bath in the State. He advised the journalists to excercise patience with the military, who has promised to replace the damaged working tools of the
journalists.
Dr. Ikpeazu was speaking when he visited the secretariate of the N.U.J., Aba road, Umuahia, urged journalists to report more of the government activities and pledged to institute more robust relationship with the press as well as look into their requests.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman, Abia State Council of the N.U.J, Comrade John Emejor appreciated the Governor for identifying with the Union and assured that the members would continue to work in line with ethics of the profession.
He narrated how the whole incident took place and used the opportunity to plead with the Governor to assist the Union complete the NUJ secretariat under construction.
It could be recalled that soldiers reportedly invaded the secretariat last week, beat up journalists and smashed their electronic gadgets alleging that the journalists took shots of their ‘show of force’ in Aba road, Umuahia.
However, both the G.O.C 82 Division, Enugu and the Brigadier Commander, Nigerian Army, Ohafia had visited and apologized to the N.U.J
